Tile Selection Tips
Selecting tiles for a renovation project.
Selecting tiles for your renovation can feel overwhelming, so I’ve pulled together some simple tips to help you choose with confidence.
Design Style
Before you start shopping, have a clear idea of the overall style you want. Modern, classic, rustic or contemporary—there’s a tile to suit every look, and knowing your direction makes the selection process much easier.
Tile Material
Ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, glass… each material behaves differently. Porcelain is durable and water‑resistant, making it ideal for bathrooms and kitchens. If you’re unsure what’s right for your space, ask an expert—it’ll save you headaches later.
Tile Size
Tile size can completely change the feel of a room. Large tiles open up a space and reduce grout lines. Smaller tiles add detail and can become a feature. I always check in with my tiler early to understand what size is most economical and practical.
Grout Colour
Grout colour can make or break the look. Matching grout creates a seamless finish, while contrasting grout highlights the pattern. If you’re using a coloured tile, a soft white grout can help balance the depth of colour beautifully.
Consider Lighting
Lighting affects how every tile reads. Low‑light spaces benefit from lighter or gloss tiles to bounce light around. Well‑lit rooms can handle darker tones for warmth and mood.
Texture and Slip Resistance
In wet areas, slip resistance matters. Textured or matte tiles offer better grip and are essential for bathrooms, laundries and outdoor spaces. Always double‑check suitability before committing.
Longevity and Maintenance
Think about how much upkeep you’re willing to take on. Natural stone is stunning but needs sealing and maintenance. Porcelain is low‑maintenance and hard‑wearing—great for busy households.
Samples and Mock-ups
Always take samples home. Look at them in your lighting, next to your cabinetry and flooring. Most tile stores will happily lend or sell samples for a small refundable fee.
Budget
Set a realistic budget that includes installation, not just the tile cost. Some tiles are inexpensive to buy but costly to lay.
Choosing the Right Tile-Laying Pattern
The laying pattern can completely change the look of your tiles—even when using the exact same product.
Straight stack: Clean, modern and minimal. Great for contemporary spaces and small-format wall tiles.
Brick bond (offset): Classic and forgiving. Helps disguise uneven walls and works well with subway tiles.
Herringbone: Adds movement and a sense of luxury. Perfect for hallways, splashbacks or feature floors.
Vertical stack: A favourite for height—ideal in showers or narrow spaces.
Large-format grid: Best for big tiles where you want a seamless, calm look.
When choosing, think about the style of your home, the shape of the room and how much visual interest you want. If in doubt, ask your tiler—they’ll know what will work best with your tile size and layout.
Get Professional Advice
If you’re still unsure, a designer or tile specialist can help you narrow down your options and avoid costly mistakes.
Selecting tiles is personal—trust your instincts and choose what feels right for your home and lifestyle.
